Explorers

Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth Section of the Scouting family. There are many types of Explorer Scout Units, some may be linked to your local Scout Group, others may be based around different activities. Explorer Scouts get the chance to work with others in the District, not just the Unit. By doing this, they will get the chance to do many more activities, not just the ones the Unit organises.

The Wokingham District Explorer Scouts  have their own web site at www.iexplore.org.uk so that's the link to follow for the best information. There are one or two interesting links below, though. They will take you to reports from recent activities, or other future events that could involve Explorers from anywhere.

Explorers about to have a go at white water canoeing during a County Expedition to Sort in the Spanish Pyrenees in the summer of 2006.

Some of the Explorers have been summer hill walking and here are a few photos thanks to Paul Auckland of Phoenix....

Phoenix Explorer Scouts meet on Mondays (19:30 - 21:00) at 1st Finchampstead

Three teams of Explorers took part in the Three Towers Hiking Competition on 4th April, and timed event over 45 Kms. You can see the full results on the Hike web site, but here are Phoenix' results:
bulletPhillip (Egg), Lewis and Dan 3rd in 7 Hrs 49 Mins
bulletTom, Stuart and Ed 4th in 7 Hrs 51 Mins
bulletBen & Tom 18th in 11 Hrs 56 Mins (Belinda did not finish)

On a Monday evening at the end of March, some members of Phoenix visited a climbing wall, and here are a few photos. The opportunity to invest new members in a way out place was taken, half way up the climbing wall!

For those who would like to see what  Phoenix will be getting up to, here's a copy of the Spring Programme.

One cool weekend in November, Trevor Lawrence of Eagles ran a "Scoutcraft Weekend" for those over 13 at Earleywood near South Ascot. Some of the Explorers from Phoenix attended and we have some photographs.... The programme included a Bacon Roll (important!), shelter building, fire lighting, knife & axe skills and backwoods cooking before they moved on to sourcing & purifying water and game preparation!

On a Monday in mid July, both Explorer Units went down to the Waterside Centre to build and race canoes out of cardboard - no one told them cardboard goes soggy when wet! But here are a few photos. In the end, they raced their canoes and a team from Phoenix won! Thanks heavens it wasn't white water!

The Young Leaders Explorer Unit is currently the biggest it has been since records began. Wokingham now have 15 registered members helping out at Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in 5 groups in the District.

Young Leaders are aged 14 - 18 and are helping out in any of the three sections. It is a requirement of POR that the young people join the unit and are registered in the District as Explorer Scouts.

We meet once a month (usually at 3rd Wokingham) and a typical meeting might see us split into two groups:-
bulletGroup One review the Yellow Card and discussed child awareness
bulletGroup Two discussed the art of communication

It is not all work and no fun - we are planning an activity in the new year just for the Young Leaders.

Here is a copy of the Young Leaders Training Programme which runs for the year to July 2009.

If you want to know more please contact us or visit this web page www.iexplore.org.uk and look for the section for Young Leaders.
