Cubs

Cub Scouts are young people usually aged between eight and ten and a half years old. They come along to the Cub Scout Pack wanting fun, adventure and friendship. With opportunities to go on visits, explore the outdoors, play games and try new things, there's rarely a dull moment!

Whether it's visiting the local fire station, competing in a swimming gala or spending a night under canvas, boys and girls across the UK enjoy getting together to do their best.

Sixers' Supper
Once again the Sixers' Supper took place at Henry Street Garden Centre in Arborfield and Sixers from 8 Packs across the District took part - Dinner for 80! Captain Richie Valance from the REME base at Arborfield gave us a talk about what he had to pack for a tour of duty with the Army. The Sixers had plenty of questions for him! 3rd Wokingham organised a mini pioneering project for the Sixers (and others) to make a catapult and in the competition, two Cubs from Kestrels won. Here are a few photographs!
Wokingham 100
Scouting has been around the Wokingham area for 100 years this year, so there's a programme of events being put together. One of these will be a trip to the Beaver/Cub Fun Day at Gilwell Park which should be great fun. Click here to find out more and to get a copy of the application form which you can print and pass to your leader.
District Orienteering Event
The District Orienteering event was cancelled thanks to the snow, but it is hoped to run the event later in the year.
District Cubs Chess Tourament
The District Chess Tournament took place on Saturday 21st November and congratulations to Harry Fox of 1st Swallowfield, who won the Tournament. A special thank you to Tim and the 1st Finchampstead team for their efforts.
Community Day
It had been planned to hold a Community Day again this year, but with a lack of support for the event, it was cancelled. However, 1st Wokingham Cubs and Beavers decided to go ahead anyway with their plans and there are some photos of the Cubs and Beavers, supported by their parents and leaders, not to mention the Wokingham Town Mayor here.
District Cooking Competition
The 2009 District Cooking Competition was hosted by 1st Woosehill on 4th October. Click here to see a few photos taken there, including one of the winners, who came from 4th Wokingham. Well done guys! A special thank you to leaders Andrew and Sally for making it happen and to Greg, Diana and Richard who helped them.. Who took part? Well there were teams from 1st Finchampstead Badgers, 4th Wokingham and 1st Woosehill Hawks and Kestrels, but where were the rest? 4th Wokingham's team will now go forward to represent the District at the County event.
Risk Assessments
At the request of the ADC a copy of the form for Risk Assessment in MS Word Format has been added to the Ideas page. Also there, you can find four examples showing how the form may be used.
1st Finchampstead Cubs visit Wings
1st Finchampstead Cubs from both Badgers and Leopards Packs visited WINGS on a Wednesday evening. WINGS is Berkshire's International Jamboree held jointly with the Guides in Windsor Great Park at the beginning of August.

The Cubs and Brownies from across Berkshire arrived at 5.30pm and were taken to the sub camps where they were met buy contingents from across the world.  1st FInchampstead were split into two and Dave's group were with some Spanish Scouts who wined and dined them.  Ruth and Patrick went to find them just after tea and our cubs were teaching them a running around game when we arrived.  The Scouts were being chased by 1st Finchampstead and loving every minute of it.  After tea the all the visitors were invited to watch the start of "WINGS Factor", a talent competition on the main stage before going home at 8.30pm. As Dave said, most of the Brownies and Cubs wanted to stay longer and watch the whole show, but it was bedtime!

Here are one or two photos from Mang at Badgers, and no doubt there are more on 1st Finchampstead's own web site. As you can see, the Cubs met Scouts from Finland as well as a certain Doctor. Cub Leaders from both Finchampstead and Finland agreed to forge stronger links in the future, so have a look at the Finnish web site at http://www.meriporinpartio.net/ .

Quidditch
On Saturday 18th July, the District held a Quidditch competition. This is a new event but if you don't know how to play, read on.

6 teams battled it out at Arborfield Recreational Ground in the sunshine. The game had been adapted from the famous Harry Potter Books and teams of six score points by throwing a “Quaffle” (foam ball) into hoops which are the goals. Team members pass the “Quaffle” to each other like netball. The hoops are set up at each end of the pitch and are of different sizes. The smaller the hoop the more points are scored.  A keeper defends the hoops with a bat.  From time to time the “snitch” (a tiny yellow ball) appears on the pitch and the first player to pick it up, scores 10 points for their team.  While the match is going on there are “Bludgers” (wet sponges) being thrown from the side lines at the players to put them off. The match lasts about 12 minutes and is refereed by a Quidditch referee.  The event was organised by Niall Collier who is Akela of 1st Finchampstead Badgers.  He said “The Cubs had a fantastic time and it was great that their parents stayed to watch and help.”

1st Woosehill Kestrels came first and won a super trophy. One Cub Scout was heard to say “This is better than football as you get wet!”  Well done Wokingham Cubs. Click here to see a few photographs from the event.
District Football
The District Football Tournament took place on 7th June and was held at Swallowfield Village Hall. 6 teams took part from Packs across the District. The rain that fell the night before softened the pitch but the sunshine during the day soon dried it out. Referees Malcolm Fillingham, Dave Judge and William Judge were very impressed with the high level of play and good sportsmanlike attitude shown by the Cubs. The Cups went to 1st Woosehill Hawks, who won the Trophy. My, did Akela make a leap into the air! 1st Woosehill Kestrels won the John Coates Shield as runners up and 1st Finchampstead Leopards won the Fair Play award so received a new shield donated by Wokingham Scout Fellowship.

A special thank you to Richard and his team of cooks from 1st Swallowfield, who helped to make it a memorable day, and of course, those referees. Here are some photos of those who took part.
