Words and Photographs from recent events that
young people from Wokingham have been involved in. This page has been
altered to show the most recent events at the top - thanks to Kaye for
that suggestion. Other pages will be adjusted over time to do the same.
Sunday 27th April saw the District celebrate St George's Day with a
parade to All Saints Church, a service there conducted by the Reverend
David Hodgson and DC, Andy McBain, and then back to the Town Hall where
the salute was taken by the Mayor. Must have been half the District
there - well done one and all. Every Group was represented but not all
the photographs came out well, so apologies to those who were missed. To
see a few more photographs, just click on this one.
Not many photographs from Winter
Hill Walking this year, but Paul Auckland took
these with his mobile phone and
passed them on. This year's expedition to Snowdonia included Explorer
Scouts, members of the Scout Network and Leaders from various parts of
Berkshire and took place at the end of January. As you can see, the
weather was more about cloud cover than the depth of snow! Has anyone
else got any photos worthy of inclusion? Just pass them to the
webmaster.
During a sunny weekend in October, leaders from 1st Emmbrook Cubs
organised a weekend of activities at Marchants Hill near Guildford.
Originally targetted at the District's Cubs, there was space for Scouts
and Explorers to join in as well. In the end there were folk from 1st
Emmbrook, 1st Woosehill, 1st Winnersh and Eagles Explorers. There are
some photographs, mainly of the Explorers, by clicking on this
photograph. There are also some photographs mainly featuring
Cubs on their page. A great
time was had by all who went.
With
only a few days to go till the 21st World Jamboree where
42,000 young people will gather from 155 countries for 12 days of fun,
friendship and learning a team of Wokingham leaders are preparing to
attend.
8 of
us will attend during the Jamboree to run an activity base “Wheels of
Water” involving up to 60 people at any one time. The competition is to
get their wheel to turn the fastest and reel in their flag.
Years
of planning has gone into the development of this project with early
discussions starting in 2004.

visited, click on the logo to the left. However, Malcolm is writing a

On 1st August 2007, Scouting
celebrated its 100th birthday with members past and present, not to
mention those of our sister organisation, the Girl Guides gathering in
various places around the world at 8AM local time to renew our promises
and launch ourselves into the second 100 years by releasing 100
balloons. Members of Wokingham and District gathered in Wokingham Town
Centre and there are a few photos
here of the event. If
anyone has more, do let the
webmaster have a copy!
This map will show you
where those balloons have been recovered so far. And the one that
travelled furthest was marked with 1st Swallowfield's name!
At
the end of May, Wokingham and District Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers
and Leaders held a camp at Park Farm on Lady Godsal's Estate. Of course
they were supported by the Scout Fellowship and a whole host of Mums and
Dads. As part of the celebrations of Scouting's 100th birthday,
virtually every District in the country was at camp that rather wet
weekend. There were a number of visitors to the site and our picture
shows DC, John Hook escorting the Mayoress of Wokingham around the site.
Just click on the photo to see some more from the various events and
visitors who made it to Park Farm.
Each Group from the
District laid on an activity and some were brought in from outside the
District.
How did it all start 100 years ago? Well Lord
Baden Powell organised a camp down on Brownsea Island in Pool Harbour
for some young boys from Eton and Harrow Schools and from the Boys
Brigade from the East End of London, so young men from all backgrounds.
