Getting photos of your section on this Web Site

Young people get a great kick out of seeing themselves live! Seeing pictures of young people enjoying themselves, maybe doing something adventurous, will attract other young people, and maybe also the thought of taking part with them will encourage other adults to come forward to help out? Some people think that adults work with Scouts, Cubs or Beavers just so they can have a go too!

So that's why, but as a busy leader, how? And can you turn it to your advantage? Easy. Firstly more and more of us are discovering how easy to use a modern digital camera is. Not got one? Well the District has which they can lend you for one of those special events you'd like to see recorded. Just ask the Media.Manager.

But as Leader, you are probably going to be too busy to mess around taking photos. Why not ask an enthusiastic parent, or elder brother or sister to come along and help you? Maybe just for the one evening. If they get a kick out of it, maybe they'll be happy to help next time. Or maybe eventually, they'll decide they'd rather get more directly involved in running the evening. That's how Leaders are recruited!

How to pass the photos to the Webmaster. If you have a PC, they can be popped onto a CD, or the odd one could even be e-mailed, but that does take a long while if you haven't got broadband. Alternatively just pass the camera back to the Webmaster and let him sort it out!

Are you using a more traditional camera and just have negatives, prints or slides? The webmaster can scan these if you can let him have them for a while.

Other thoughts:

bulletA picture of the Colony, Pack or Troop lined up in straight rows is fine, but much better are photos of the young people doing something and just enjoying themselves.
bulletTake the picture of a larger area than just the children themselves. Photos can be easily cropped, but adding stuff that has been accidentally left out is much tougher!
bulletIf you can, set your camera to take pictures of at least 1024*768 pixels. The webmaster can reduce that if he needs to, but increasing the size of smaller pictures can lead to a loss of resolution (sharpness).
bulletIdeally, the folk you are photographing will not know what you're doing. Informal and natural is what we're after.
bulletAnd once a week, the County Web Site publish a photo of the week. Wokingham has had some successes, why not a picture of your section?
bulletDuff photo? Pass it to the webmaster and let him have a go at repairing it. Amazing what can be done!
bulletAnd finally, don't forget the Leaders - after all, they are allowed to have fun too!

Have fun!
